Programs

Law Phone-in and Lawyer Referral Program
Funded by the Law Society of Manitoba and The Manitoba Law Foundation, the Law Phone-In and Lawyer Referral Program provides general legal information over the phone in response to callers’ inquiries. Callers are also referred to appropriate law-related agencies where such an agency exists and the situation warrants it.

Where the caller requires legal advice and would like to be referred to a lawyer, a referral can be made from a list of about 130 lawyers who have chosen to register with the service.

The Law Phone-In and Lawyer Referral Program has two Lawyers on staff. Because of the high volume of calls, calls will be returned in the order they are received.

(Please note we are not an emergency Service)

The office hours for the service are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

There are two Winnipeg lines and a provincial toll-free line. During office hours, the caller will be asked to leave a brief message on the answering machine. (Please provide the following information: name, number, reason for your call and times you can be reached.)

To reach the Law Phone-In and Lawyer Referral service, call 204-943-2305 or toll free 1-800-262-8800 (from outside Winnipeg only please).

For a referral to a lawyer only, you can call 204-943-3602. (Please note this line is for a referral to a lawyer only. For legal information questions, please call 204-943-2305 or check out our frequently asked questions section on our website.)

Although all the lawyers participating in the Lawyer Referral Service are qualified to practice law, neither Community Legal Education Association nor the Law Society of Manitoba represent to clients that lawyers who take part in the service are specialists in any particular legal subject.

Speakers Bureau
CLEA operates a Speakers Bureau of volunteer lawyers and service providers who give us their time each year to provide legal information sessions to the community on request. The service is free to community groups and agencies. However, donations are gratefully appreciated. We try to provide these services throughout Manitoba using local volunteers, but our efforts may be limited by availability of volunteers.

We require at least 6 weeks notice of the presentation requested in order to coordinate our volunteer speakers and to confirm all arrangements.

Community Legal Intermediary Training Course
The Community Legal Intermediary Training Course (CLI) is a program that targets individuals who are often called upon to help others in the community with legal problems, whether in the role of a worker, friend or community leader. The program aims to provide participants with basic knowledge about our laws and legal system, and to inform them of the proper role of a legal intermediary.

Classes for the CLI program run twice a year in September and January. The CLI course is held each Wednesday from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm at our office, Suite 205 – 414 Graham Avenue, Winnipeg. The total length of the course is 10 weeks. The cost of registration is $100.00. (Registration fees are subject to change)

Register early, as space is limited to 10 participants. CLEA may limit the number of registrations from any agency or organization due to space restrictions.

Annual Law Conference
Community Legal Education Association holds an annual Law Conference. Please contact us at 204-943-2382 for more information.

Workshops and Classes
CLEA co-sponsors workshops and classes with community partners, designed to meet the partner’s needs for their staff, volunteers and/or clients. We work with a wide variety of community partners to reach a broad base of Manitobans. Workshops tend to be small and focused, in order to facilitate group learning. Classes are open to the public, and may require registration, and in some cases, payment of registration fees.

Legal Information Publications
Community Legal Education Association publishes and distributes printed material, most of it free, on a variety of legal subjects. We have also produced several booklets for unrepresented litigants: Uncontested Divorce Guide, Small Claims Guide, and Probate Court Guide for Small Estates.

Funders
