The Salvation Army WKRP / STEP Programs

WorK Readiness Program (WKRP)

The Salvation Army Work Readiness Program is designed to help people (18 years of age or older) who are under or unemployed gain the skills needed to get and keep employment.

WKRP has been operational since 1996 and seeks to improve the employability of high-needs social assistance recipients with financial support from the Province of Manitoba as well as individuals who are under or unemployed and not on social assistance.

Program Goals:

To improve the employability of participants by:
» Helping individuals develop basic life skills through one-on-one counselling and daily classes focusing on computer skills, job skills and life skills
» Assisting individuals in the preparation of their resumes
» Improving interview skills and helping individuals present themselves and their skills in a positive manner

About the Program

The Work Readiness Program offers daily job search assistance by offering job search and life skills classes, basic job search related computer skills classes, and a supervised job search. WKRP focuses on developing a good work ethic within job seekers. Clients are required to participate in their daily job search while attending classes, and graduate from program when they find employment. WKRP is not a job placement organization. WKRP teaches participants the skills necessary to find employment. While the resources needed to apply for jobs are available to them through the program, they have to apply for the jobs themselves. This is so that if participants become unemployed again in the future they are able to use the skills they gained as a participant in WKRP and job search on their own.

STages Education Program (STEP)

What is STEP?

STEP is a safe and friendly community-based adult literacy program that is open to anyone with a low literacy level (usually below a grade 6). There is no set curriculum so that an education plan can be developed for each student, as an individual. This facilitates a positive, encouraging and non-judgemental learning environment.

There are two stages in the STEP literacy program. Stage 1 is for students with reading levels ranging from non-reader to grade 3 and Stage 2 is for reading levels of grade 3 to grade 6.

Class Schedule:

Stage One:
» Monday – Friday 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Stage Two:
» Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
» Wednesday 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
» Friday 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Program Goals:

To create a safe, caring learning environment to challenge students to enhance their literacy skills by:
» Focusing on each individual student as a person and learner
» Nurture and develop each student’s self-worth, self-respect, self-discipline and pride in personal achievement
» Foster the development of social responsibility and respect for others and their rights
» Provide opportunities for the development of competence and the achievement of goals in the basic skills
» Provide a learning environment conducive to the development of mental and physical well-being and moral sensitivity
» Provide opportunities for students to grow and learn through co-operative experiences
» Recognize the professional instructor is the key element in the education process

Classes include:
» Reading
» Writing
» Math
» Social Studies
» Computers
» Life Skills

Additional opportunities for students include:
» Individual one-on-one tutoring can be arranged with one of the teachers or volunteers
» Field trips, life skills lunches and community projects related to literacy studies are arranged when appropriate
